All three of these gentlemen are dedicated to the development of skills within Inayan Eskrima and have taken it upon themselves to spread Inayan Eskrima where they can. Throughout their years of training they have proven their loyalty and met the standards within the IS3 curriculum whenever tested.

IS3 Summer Camp in Germany and France

As summer develops we get into the area of time for the IS3 training Camps in Europe. This year we are developing two different camps in two different countries (France and Germany). Registration for these camps has begun.

The French camp (July 20th – July 24th) only has 6 beds left! There are hotels very close so it is possible to participate in the training without staying at the location. However with the size of this camp being very small and the intimacy of this event being the focus, if you want to take advantage of the proximity to others after training for social activities, it is highly suggested that you register directly.

To reserve you place in the French camp (This should be done before June 10th) please contact Olivier Nguyen at:  o.nguyen[at]

As well there are only 10 days left until the end of the early-bird registration period for the camp in Germany. After that you will only have about two weeks left for registration and payment to secure your bed and participation in the camp. We cannot guarantee participation after 29.05.2014. The early-bird discount will end on 15.05.2014.

You can register for the Germany camp here:

If you need any assistance regarding travel or payment, please let us know. We will be happy to help you, just contact us at:

Katalungan Guro Promotion

katalungan-guro-KennethIt is with great pleasure I announce to the world the promotion of Kenneth Johansson to the IS3 rank of Katalungan Guro.

Mr. Johansson is my longest training student in Europe and has been involved with Inayan Eskrima since 1999. Following a two day test that concluded on Friday January 24th, 2014, Kenneth enters a very small circle of IS3 Guros. His dedication to the future of Inayan System III Eskrima and to the development of IS3 in Sweden has been a great example to all that know him inside and outside the art.

With the involvement of such a man in the spread of Inayan Eskrima comes a confidence that allows both senior and junior practitioners to concentrate within an environment of security and friendship. I am looking forward to Mr. johansson’s promotion to Full Guro in the years ahead and to the continued work we will share in the future.

Congratulations Kenneth and thank you for all that you have done for me, my teacher and IS3 Eskrima. Continue to hit hard, block hard and keep smiling. It is with honor and pride I present to the world Katalungan Guro Kenneth Johansson.

IS3 Kasama

On September 28, 2013 I invoked the IS3 Kasama Rank. Traditionally this rank has been reserved for individuals that have shown longtime sincere loyalty to Inayan Eskrima along with the ability to teach and share the basic principals within the system. These individuals have not reached the rank of Full Inayan Guro but have shown the abilities to teach different aspects. It is understood that the IS3 Kasama will continue to work towards achieving the rank of Full IS3 Guro. In the case of Kasama Gary Benson, he has been given the rights and responsibilities to teach and test material within the full curriculum up to Student Level 5. As his teaching skills and understanding of the requirements above that rank improve, he will be granted testing rights accordingly.

Kasama Benson’s history in Inayan Eskrima reaches back over 20 years to the days of The Inayan Training Organization (ITO) under the direction of Mangisursuro himself. He has been instrumental in the spreading of Inayan Eskrima in Southern Wisconsin, U.S.A. and made a commitment to IS3 to continue that work into the future as a partner and elder guide. As one of our elder practitioners, his life experience is a good resource for IS3 members and has always been given with a heart felt and honest delivery. I am looking forward to working with Kasama Benson to spread our art into the future.

Welcome IS3 Kasama Gary Benson.

Guro Promotions

It is with great pride that I announce to the world three promotions to the rank of IS3 Katalungan Guro.

This rank is often a long term goal for low level students and a transition for those that have walked a long road with many challenges. Although the time spent on the road to this junction can vary for different people, the commitment must be the same to move on from here. The ideas of the road ahead are thought about with dreamy eyes and a new lightness in the step.

The pride that comes with the rank of Inayan Guro has been made by the few that have come before with the blood, sweat, tears and the dedication to overcome the hurdles that are in the road on this special path. It is a very big responsibility to maintain this pride and walk with an honor that is no longer your own. Moving forward you are no longer judged only by your instructor and fellow students, but by everyone that knows the name and honor that is an Inayan Guro.

Within IS3 the transition to this rank is not done with a “Test” in the classic way. You are being testing every day and evaluated by your instructor for many years. You have arrived to a place that has only a few roads to it but only two roads moving forward; a Full Inayan Guro or not. THE CHOICE IS YOURS.

Katalungan Guro Dave Swoboda
Katalungan Guro Michael Kosobucki, aka “Ricky”
Katalungan Guro Jake Mandel

I am honored to promote you to this position and walk with you side by side on the path ahead. Your input into the direction that our small band takes is valued and given great consideration and respect.

Masirib Tom Skoglind and Masirib Keith Schuch have brought you to this place with a pride that is well deserved and with a confidence I trust. They too are honored in this transition and warrant congratulations on great work. Our “Band of Brothers” has been strengthened and the horizons have been broadened by your sacrifices.

There are the “Unseen” in this process that most often make the biggest sacrifice, the family and loved ones. They give up precious time with the ones they love to allow them to train and learn, most often away from home.
I say THANK YOU for sharing these wonderful people with our family.

Congratulations to you all on this monumental achievement!

I look forward to the years ahead and the road we will travel together.

My deepest heartfelt WELCOME TO THE CLUB.

With respect,

Suro Emanuel Hart

Eskrima International in Sweden

It was another great trip to IS3 Sweden for our regular training! This was the first EI Style Specific class that I taught there; Working with IS3 Serrada and IS3 Kadena De Mano. It is always nice to see new people getting involved with Inayan Eskrima and watching/participating in the growth of familiar practitioners.  For the most part, all practitioners there are willing to work through painful lessons and take steps to change consistent mistakes. We spent time working with advanced Serrada counters and dynamic entry work for KDM. The bruises will heal over time and the memories will last. Thank you all for participating in this great class. I am already looking forward to the IS3 Winter Camp there in November.
Until the next time,
Stay sharp to stay safe!

Suro Emanuel Hart

Founder of Inayan System III Eskrima Suro Emanuel Hart

Suro Emanuel Hart
Inayan System III Eskrima

In 1984 Mr. Hart started his training in Inayan Eskrima under the tutelage of Inayan Guro John Peterson in San Jose California. After meeting Mangisursuro Michael G. Inay in 1985 Mr. Hart became a member of the Inayan System of Eskrima School in Santa Cruz California. Training a minimum of three classes a week, he worked his way up the ranks and in 1991 was promoted to Inayan Guro and took on the responsibilities of that rank in GM Inay’s school.

Throughout the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Mr. Hart worked intricately with Mangisursuro Inay on the Inayan Pressure Sensitive Nerve Areas (PSNA) and Inayan Reactive Knife Defense (RKD) in conjunction with the development of other Inayan training programs. Starting in 1992 Mr. Hart did three European tours assisting Mangisursuro Inay in bringing Inayan Eskrima to England, Germany, France, Norway and Sweden. While conducting these tours, Mr. Hart filmed five video productions with Mangisursuro. In 1997 Mr. Hart filmed the last Inayan Kadena de Mano video with the Inayan Eskrima founder.

In a recorded Will made on December 11, 1999, almost one year before his death on September 27, 2000, GM Mike Inay stated that at the time of his death Mr. Hart would assume the title and responsibilities of Inayan “Suro” (Heir/Master) as one of three heirs, and the only non-family member authorized by GM Mike Inay to use the “Suro” title.

Following the death of GM Mike Inay, and working with other Inayan Guros certified by Mangisursuro Inay, Mr. Hart moved to Paris France and Established the Academy of Inayan Arts (AIA)-Paris to continue the spread of Inayan Eskrima throughout Europe. The following year (2002) Mr. Hart was a guest instructor representing Inayan Eskrima in the first FMA festival in Europe. Suro Hart conducted the first annual European Inayan Eskrima Training Camp in 2004, starting a tradition that continues today.

In 2005 Mr. Hart outlined the requirements for Inayan System III Eskrima, started to use the “Suro” title, and established Eskrima International (EI) the branch of IS3 that interfaces with other Martial Art organizations to incorporate Inayan Eskrima into their training programs. In 2008 Suro Hart introduced Inayan Eskrima to South America by teaching seminars in Venezuela with participants from; Chile, Ecuador, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Panama, Guatemala, Colombia, Mexico, Honduras, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

For most of his life Suro Hart has been dedicated to the preservation of the Inayan System of Eskrima as taught to him by Mangisursuro Michael G. Inay. Suro Hart spent over 16 years studying from the founder, and over seven (7) years living and training with the founder as a private student. Over those years Suro Hart earned the trust and confidence of the founder in his abilities to apply, teach, and continue the traditions of The Inayan System of Eskrima. Today, Suro Hart lives in the south of France and continues training and developing students throughout the world.

Mangisursuro Michael G. Inay

Inayan System of Eskrima Founder Mangisursuro Michael G. Inay Mangisursuro Michael G. Inay
Inayan System of Eskrima Founder
December 11, 1944 – September 27, 2000

Inayan Eskrima was developed by Mangisursuro Michael G. Inay. Suro Inay devoted his entire adult life to the promotion, preservation, and propagation of the Filipino Martial Arts.

Mangisursuro Inay studied privately under the tutelage of two great Eskrima GrandMasters, Max Sarmiento and Angel Cabales. Mangisursuro Inay proposed the formation of an organization to preserve and promote the Cabales Serrada Style of Eskrima to GrandMaster Angel Cabales. With Mangisursuro Inay’s help, GrandMaster Cabales formed the first Cabales Serrada association. Mangisursuro Inay also developed a ranking structure for GrandMaster Cabales.

The ranks that were developed and presented to the budding Cabales Serrada Association were:

Basic Level CertificateAdvanced Degree CertificateMasters Degree Certificate

The Advanced Degree and the Masters Degree gave the certificate holders permission to award rank in the Cabales Serrada Style of Eskrima. Each certificate was an acknowledgment of proficiency achievement by the student named there-on. GrandMaster Cabales accepted and adopted the three certificates and at least two of the certificates were in use as of 1998.

Mangisursuro Inay co-founded the West Coast Eskrima Society with its first chairman, GrandMaster Max Sarmiento in 1979. The West Coast Eskrima Society was formally inaugurated in Los Gatos, California in Mangisursuro Inay’s home. The West Coast Eskrima Society was founded in the hopes of preserving, propagating and promoting the Filipino Martial Arts. The “West Coast Eskrima Society” was, for the first time in the Filipino Martial Arts community, able to unite several Filipino Masters under one organization. The Society’s Charter was signed on January 13, 1979. Many notable Eskrima Masters joined the West Coast Eskrima Society and were present during the Charter signing. Some of the original members were: Max Sarmiento, Mike Inay, Jimmy Tacosa, Jeffrey Elliott, San Tendencia, Dentoy Revillar, Gilbert Tenio, Leo Giron, Narrie Babao, Dan Inosanto and Richard Bustillo.

Mangisursuro Inay was instrumental in bringing both The “West Coast Eskrima Society” and the “Cabales-Serrada Eskrima Association” to light. They were the forerunners of the present day Filipino Martial Arts organizations that have emerged in the last 20 years.

Mangisursuro Inay also played an integral role in the events over the 30 years that lead to the growing acceptance of the Filipino Martial Arts in the U.S. and Europe.

Mangisursuro Inay began teaching law enforcement throughout the United States and became well known and respected in the law enforcement community. Mangisursuro Inay also began traveling abroad to conduct seminars and clinics on Inayan Eskrima in England, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, Canada and Australia.

At the request of a large Midwest law enforcement organization, PPCT, Mangisursuro Inay developed the first nationwide law enforcement knife defense program called “Spontaneous Knife Defense”. He also appeared on Law Enforcement Television Network (LETN). Mangisursuro Inay developed several courses dealing with pressure sensitive nerve areas, riot baton and advanced knife training. Mangisursuro Inay also developed the use of the knife as an alternative weapon for executive protection in instances where a firearm is not warranted or safe to use.

During this period, Mangisursuro Inay also developed and refined the Inayan System of Eskrima (ISE). Inayan Eskrima is comprised of 7 distinct styles of Eskrima. Each of these styles have a complete set of basic, intermediate, and advanced techniques and concepts that make them independent of each other in terms of self-defense viability.

Mangisursuro Inay put a learning structure to these styles and a ranking system for grading. Mangisursuro Inay elected to call all of the styles he teaches “Inayan” to avoid confusion with other teachers and styles that have the same or similar names. This also reduced the amount of controversy and claims of validity others could or could not profess with regard to “Inayan” Eskrima.

Mangisursuro Inay passed away while doing what he loved the most – teaching Inayan Eskrima. Though he was taken from us long before his time, he made a profound impact in the lives of many.
